Mommy Time

Well, Evan made it through his second weekend home. On Saturday night, he even went grocery shopping for the first time. Things have been going great. Everyone always says how fast they grow up. He's only two weeks old and it IS amazing how fast they grow up.

On Monday, Daddy went back to work. So, that left Mommy and Evan home alone for the first time. Even though Mom was a little nervous about it, she did great. She definitely has the magic touch with him (of course the fact that she is his only food source helps too!). Daddy also discovered the baby carrier and found out that making dinner is a lot easier when he has both hands free!

On Tuesday, Evan visited Maggie (Nurse Practitioner) for his two week checkup. He's gained back almost all the weight he lost and is doing great. He's fighting a some plugged tear ducts but luckily Maggie said it's pretty normal. Mommy and Daddy just have to keep his eyes clean. Evan also got his first real bath tonight. As you can see, he still doesn't like to be without his clothes. However, once we got him to sit in the bath water, he loved it. It looks like he already likes the water. That will come in handy next spring when the boat goes back in the water.

Tomorrow, Mommy's going to take Evan to Grandma Gay's for a couple hours so Grandma Gay's friends can meet him also. Maybe Daddy will take off for lunch and meet them.

Days go by......

It's hard to believe that Evan has been home with us for just over a week. The time has gone by so fast! We are starting to see more of his beautiful eyes. We are keeping busy with his feedings and changing lots of diapers. He really dislikes being undressed to be changed. He wakes up every 2-3 hours during the night to eat.

Evan does not enjoy being without his clothes.

Vikings and Visitors

Well, the last three days have revolved around the Minnesota Vikings and visitors. On Sunday, Evan had a lot of visitors. Erika, Joel, Friedo (Ryan), and Robin all stopped over. Aaron and Tanya were going to stop also but had car troubles and will have to see him on the next trip down. Friedo and Robin have an 8 week old boy named Adam. Adam, like his father, is a Green Bay Packers fan. Evan, like his father, is a Vikings fan. However, it's a lot easier to be a Packers fan these days than a Vikings fan. However, Evan is weathering the storm like this father. (Although his father has been to help him cope!).

Later on Sunday, Mindy stopped by and said hi. On Sunday night, Evan's uncle Greg stopped by and had dinner with everyone. Evan's looking forward to getting fishing lessons from Greg since Daddy sucks at fishing.


On Monday, Evan got to visit Denise's office and got to meet all of her coworkers. Evan spent the rest of Monday sleeping as he got circumcised on Monday afternoon. Monday night, Grandma Gay and Grandpa Bob and Sherry visited while Sherry was in town.

Tuesday was a very busy day for Evan. Today was the 3rd anniversary of the first date between Eric and Denise. On every anniversary of their first date, they go back to the restaurant where they had their first date. So, Mommy, Daddy, and Evan packed up and made the trip to the site of the first date. Lunch was great and then everyone went to Eric's work and Evan got to meet all of Eric's coworkers. Evan even got to visit everyone on the production floor! Then, Evan made his first trip to Costco and Target. It's amazing how well those infant car seats fit in the Target shopping carts. Mommy managed to sneak in a feeding in there, but otherwise Evan pretty much slept through the event.

Tomorrow's going to be another busy day as Grandma Shirley and Grandpa Dewey visit during the day. Tomorrow evening, Jennie, Chris, Shannon, and Howie are going to swing by.

Eating, Sleeping, and Pooping

That pretty much sums up Evan's life here at home. Well, there have been a few visitors and he's always up for more. Kevin and Glenda visited Evan on Saturday. So, if you want to see him, just give mommy and daddy a call.



The good news is that he's eating, sleeping, and pooping well. The hospital told us how much he should be eating, sleeping, and pooping and he's right on target.



On Friday, he got to go to the pediatric clinic and visit Maggie. Maggie is a Nurse Practitioner who specializes in newborns. She was great. She spent over 90 minutes with us and went over just about everything.



Today, Evan will get to watch his first Vikings game. With daddy's luck, he might sleep right through it. However, that's not different from a lot of Vikings fans lately.



Later this week, we're all hoping to make it to mommy's and daddy's work.

Discharged!

Well, we were all discharged from the hospital this afternoon. We decided that we needed to do something crazy on the way home rather than just drive straight home. So, we called our friend Jennie who works on the way home and stopped by and let her see Evan. I guess you could call it a tradition. When Eric was born, he actually went to Beth Trunk's (close friend of the family) house first and then went home. We decided to carry on the tradition. We also decided to stop at McDonald's and get food. Because when you have a 3 day old baby in the car, why would you not stop at McDonald's. We all made it home safely, got Evan fed, and got settled. We're all going to the pediatrician tomorrow morning for Evan's first checkup. Then, we're just going to focus on eating, SLEEPING, SLEEPING, SLEEPING, and SLEEPING.

I'm sure many of you would like to meet the little guy, so just give us a call and we'll get you over to see him.

The first 48 hours

Well, the first 48 hours have flown by. After the post on Monday, we spent most of the evening waking up to two things. One was all the machines Denise was hooked up to kept having alarms going off. Don't worry. They were all stupid false alarms. The second was, of course Evan. However, he actually slept pretty well. The biggest issue was getting him to breastfeed. One would think you'd just show him where to go and let his instincts take over. Apparently, it's a little more complicated than that. Since he wouldn't always "go to town", we actually "supplemented" him with an ounce or two of formula. They're worried about "nipple confusion" (we'll save Eric's comments for that topic). So, we actually let him suck on a finger and then put the formula in an eye dropper and let him suck it out of the corner of his mouth. This really helped us when he wouldn't sleep in the middle of the night. Now, both Evan and Denise have made a lot of progress. He's nursing well now. A good feeding will pretty much put him asleep for 2-3 hours.

The last two days we had a lot of visitors (all grandparents, the only living great grandparent, two aunts, an uncle, four friends, and a partridge in a pear tree). We're hoping we can go home tomorrow. We're looking forward to getting settled and getting Eddie (the cat) introduced to Evan. Then, we're hoping the rest of you will get a chance to swing by and see him if you'd like.

Welcome Evan!

At 4:08 PM today, Evan Christopher Schmidt was born via scheduled c-section. Both mom and baby are doing great. He weighed 8 lbs 8 oz and was 19-3/4" long. He's sleeping now, so mommy and daddy are going to try to do the same. Check back for more postings.

Okay, we probably should've started a website when we got married, but we didn't. We probably should've started a website when we found out we were expecting, but we didn't. So, little "Baby" is due in a just a few days. So, we thought better late than never. All of the postings previous to this are actually "back-posted", but we hope you enjoy them. From here on out, they'll all be posted in real-time.
